From the start, monocle has written about the world of work: entrepreneurship, running companies well (no matter what size the enterprise is) and making stuff. But then these were all things that were important to us – we were living and doing them every day.

When we launched in 2007, monocle magazine was a fresh-faced start-up with a bright idea. We were out to prove that there was a place in the changing media landscape for a business that believed in the power of print: from the words that made the page to the quality and warmth of the paper that we used. We also wanted to produce a magazine that would have a clear view of the world, offer handsome photography, be independent, have a global remit and use digital possibilities in a more innovative way than just an iPad version of our title.

But beyond that we were also out to run a successful company. We have had to make a lot of decisions as we have gone from a team of nine to 100 and expanded our range to include two seasonal newspapers, a round-the-clock radio station called Monocle 24, shops, e-commerce, cafés in Tokyo and London and a move into book publishing (you are holding one of its results). We have also had to think about developing a brand while staying true to our core beliefs. In short, we know quite a lot about the decisions that face people when running a company.

Meanwhile, in monocle we have written extensively about the shifting world of work while giving people the advice and encouragement they need to start a business. And on Monocle 24 we have followed the business world on our weekly radio show, The Entrepreneurs.

All of this has happened at an interesting time. We have seen rapid growth in the use of shared spaces, the rise of a generation of people who only want to work for themselves and are immune to the lure of the corporate world, and a genuine shift in how businesses operate, with many old hierarchies sidelined forever. That is why we have created The Monocle Guide to Good Business.
